See full size imageThe birthstone for July is the ruby.  Ruby is a variety of the mineral "corundum" (aluminum oxide).  The hardest mineral after diamond, ruby is desired for its color, luster, and rarity.  Varying in color from bright red to dark reddish brown, the most preferred color is "pigeon's blood", a deep blood red with a bluish cast.  The color of this mineral varies within each deposit; thus it is not possible to identify the source from the color alone. Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Sri Lanka and Tanzania have some of the most important deposits.  For centuries, the most important source has been in upper Burma where only about 1% of production is of gemstone quality.

The metaphysical properties of ruby promote spiritual wisdom, health, and knowledge.  Ruby was frequently the gemstone of choice for royalty and priests for its ability to offer guidance in making decisions.  Ruby is associated with the heart chakra.
