            News and Notes

The birthstone for February is the amethyst, a purple quartz whose color comes from tiny impurities of iron.  Amethyst is interesting in that it varies greatly from one location to another.  Experts can identify the mine source of the gemstone by its color and crystal formation. When amethyst is heat-treated, it produces the yellow color of citrine, a rarer quartz variety.  When amethyst develops in bands with citrine, it is called ametrine.
