News and Notes The birthstone for February is the amethyst, a purple quartz whose color comes from tiny impurities of iron. Amethyst is interesting in that it varies greatly from one location to another. Experts can identify the mine source of the gemstone by its color and crystal formation. When amethyst is heat-treated, it produces the yellow color of citrine, a rarer quartz variety. When amethyst develops in bands with citrine, it is called ametrine.
The word amethyst is derived from the Greek word amethustos meaning sober, and it is said that wearing the stone prevents drunkenness. It is used as a dream stone and to prevent insomnia. It promotes calmness and clarity, and aids in attaining wisdom. Often worn by healers, it has the power to focus energy. Amethyst is associated with the sixth, or Third Eye, chakra and the seventh, or crown, chakra.
